Providing Critical Care in Chelan County: Designing a medical center addition with Bavarian charm

With its Bavarian style architecture, the Cascade Medical Center captures the essence of the Leavenworth aesthetic, while giving local residents and guests’ access to a quality healthcare facility. Originally built as a one story medical center, DCI provided engineering design to build a 23,000-sf, two story addition resulting in a relocation of the acute care emergency department on the ground floor. The second floor will be home to a relocated doctors' clinic and the lower level will house building services, including covered ambulance parking.

Project Highlights

  • The first and second floor consists of steel joists and girders with a concrete composite deck for adequate vibration performance.
  • The new addition consists of structural steel and exposed heavy timber.
  • Wood was also used for the roof with architecturally exposed glulam beams and wood decking.
  • Helical piers were used to shore the existing hospital foundation in order to locate new structural columns as close to the existing wall as possible to maximize floor space.
