FIRST UNITED BANK (FREDERICKSBURG)

FIRST UNITED BANK (FREDERICKSBURG)

Southern Community Banking: First mass timber retail structure in Texas

Featuring CLT made from locally sourced southern yellow pine, this milestone project is the first mass timber structure in Texas. Expansive floor-to-ceiling heights allow for natural daylight while large cantilevered CLT overhangs provide shade for reduced energy costs, lending to the goal of a net zero energy building.

DCI Engineers designed the building’s foundation, framing, and lateral force resisting system of wood sheathed shear walls.

Project Highlights

  • Gensler estimates 190 tons of CO2 is offset through the use of sustainably harvested timber for the First United Bank in Fredericksburg.
  • The building also includes a rainwater collection system which collects up to 250 million gallons of rainwater runoff annually to support the bank’s landscaping.
  • With mass timber’s flexibility in accommodating HVAC locations, the one-story bank also features a high-efficiency VRF HVAC system.
