Retrofitting Portland’s Historic Globe Hotel: Providing engineering solutions to convert an old building into an educational space
DCI Engineers provided structural design services for the full seismic upgrade of the existing four-story Globe Hotel building, originally constructed in 1910. The retrofit converted the building into an educational facility for the Oregon College for Oriental Medicine, which includes classrooms, treatment rooms, and administrative offices.
- Added a wood framed fifth floor to the existing roof in order to provide additional office space.
- Concrete topping was added to each floor and provided benefits in three ways: stiffened the floors, improved acoustical barriers between floors, and acted as rigid diaphragms, since the south and west walls will remain open for storefronts and windows.
- Added strategic shotcrete walls inside the building to act as a lateral system up to the fifth floor.
