Safe Communities; Safe Engineering: Designing Oregon’s largest municipal jail

As the largest municipal jail in the State of Oregon, DCI Engineers provided the structural engineering design for this 104,578-sf facility that was designed to promote safety within the Springfield area as well as provide proper space for inmates. The justice center was completed in phases with the first phase being the detention holding area. The second phase includes the design and construction of the police station, municipal court, and holding facility. Special dynamic studies were conducted to assure that the floor system in the courtrooms would be free from noticeable vibration. The lateral force resisting system for the building was designed for 1.5 times the seismic forces associated with normal buildings, to reflect the need for continued operation after a major earthquake.

Project Highlights:

  • The jail was constructed using concrete masonry walls and steel joists with a metal deck roofing system.
  • The detention cells were pre-fabricated units that could simply be installed on-site. This construction was straight-forward and allowed for enhanced security.
  • The Police/Courthouse portion was constructed using conventional steel framing and a composite concrete deck.
  • Facility also features a secured sally port and room for 100 jail beds.
