Engineering Week 2014 Recap

Showing Spokane Area Students What Being an Engineer is all About

In celebration of Engineering Week 2014, DCI Engineers had the pleasure of being a part of the Greater Spokane Incorporated’s, Business AfterSchool program. This program introduces area students to high-demand industries and demonstrates to them what skills and educational paths will be required. We had the opportunity to give the students a tour of one of our project sites, the Convention Center Hotel located in Spokane, Washington and illustrate to them the scope of planning and cooperation that goes into building a 716-key hotel. After the conclusion of the site visit, the students joined some of our engineers to work on designing a model of an efficient sewer system in order to understand the many types of projects that engineers often work on. The students also participated in a building block exercise that demonstrated the concepts behind pre-stress concrete and post-tensioned concrete design as well as recieving a introduction to 3-D CAD modeling capabilities within Revit®.The EWeek 2014 event hosted more than 120 students from eight districts, 28 different schools, and involved nine companies from the surrounding area. If you would like to read more about the activities that the students participated in, check out the Greater Spokane Incorporated’s blog post, Students Learn About Career Opportunities During Engineering Week.
