Portland Community College Newberg Center

The AIA Committee on Architecture for Education recently announced the winners of their 2012 Design Awards, and DCI is happy to announce that one of our projects made the cut! This AIA awards program aims to identify emerging trends and ideas in the design of educational and cultural facilities, honor excellence in planning and design, and to share knowledge about best practices. At DCI we take the design and longevity of educational facilities very seriously, so it is an honor for our Portland Community College Newberg Center project to be given a 2012 Citation Award!

We love the sustainable design elements that are incorporated into this new 13,000-sf academic and administrative center. We are especially fond of the sophisticated HVAC control system that heats the building in the winter by pumping warm water through pipes embedded in the concrete floor. In the warmer months, exterior louvers and turbine fans work together as part of a “night flush” system, expelling hot air and bringing in cooler night air.

Our structural team in Portland enjoyed working with Henneberry Eddy Architects on this project, and we hope that the students at Portland Community College reap its benefits for many years to come. Congratulations to the entire design team and all those involved in this project’s successful completion!
