On May 24th, DCI joined the Bullitt Foundation, Miller Hull Partnership, PAE Engineers, Schuchart, and other sponsors to celebrate the Bullitt Center’s 5th year in maintaining the Living Building status. Visitors explored floor levels open to the public to see features of modern, sustainable workplaces. Since the weather cooperated during the tours, guests experienced open-air conference rooms, workspaces, and patios.
There were plenty of non-weather dependent features to see up close, such as quiet workspace pods, a smaller Dr. Who-themed conference room, adjustable walls, operable windows, skylights, and a daylit basement office level.
DCI was the Structural Engineer of Record for the Bullitt Center. All structural materials used for the construction – concrete, heavy timber, steel reinforcing - were locally sourced. The engineering team designed a steel system to accommodate the rooftop skylights and solar panels. They calculated loads and planned the concrete transfer beam layout for the rooftop gardens and column arrangement for the two-story daylit basement level.
Five years can render computer technology obsolete, but not so with built environments. The Bullitt Center is still a relevant commercial office space and will continue to be for decades under the Living Building Challenge.
