Destination Austin: Exclusive terminal for private jet commuters

Austin Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) Million Air is a private fixed base operator (FBO) aviation development for private jet commuters. The ABIA development includes a two-story main terminal building, a drive-up porte cochere, a free-standing cantilevered aircraft canopy, and seven hangar buildings encompassing more than 124,000-sf of lease space.

DCI Engineers was the primary structural Engineer of Record for the development. The staff designed the main terminal building with a framing system comprising of conventional structural steel and wood. The team was also responsible for the foundation designs for each hangar building. They designed the structural framing for the aircraft canopy which consists of four main tapered steel support members anchored to concrete buttress walls. The exposed steel canopy structure is large enough to cover a Gulfstream G650 aircraft and provides an distinctive feature for private jet commuters arriving into the exclusive terminal.

Project Highlights

  • Development includes a distinctive 175-ft x 75 ft aircraft canopy that is a free-standing cantilevered feature. The structure has a clear span of more than 60 ft and extend to a height of 40 ft above the ground to the canopy’s peak.
  • The main terminal building includes amenities, such as passenger and pilot lounges, a private club with concierge service, conference rooms, and flight planning rooms.
