Historic Lazaretto

Preserving the Past: First quarantine facility readapted into offices and museum

The Historic Lazaretto is the first quarantine station built in North America for handling the yellow fever epidemic and other illnesses. Constructed in 1801, the structure required renovations to meet current building codes for converting into a museum and office facility. DCI+MacINTOSH Engineering assessed existing conditions of the lateral load systems, which comprised of brick masonry and wood floor diaphragms. The team recommended demolition of specific areas of the building; detailed stabilization elements; and developed new floor and roof framing plans.
