NKS Distribution Warehouse

Tilt-up and Turn-up: NKS Distributor’s warehouse’s concrete foundation can keep beer cool without a refrigerator

NKS Distributors is the largest distributor of beer in the state of Delaware. In 2022, they consolidated their operations from two offices in New Castle and Milford into one 245,000-sf warehouse with a 10,000-sf office in Smyrna, Delaware. DCI Engineers used reinforced concrete on the warehouse’s foundation so that it could withstand the daily thru traffic of delivery trucks. Additionally, DCI designed storage areas so beverages could be stored in the open while simultaneously keeping them thermally insulated. The client also wanted a more traditional office connected to the warehouse. To incorporate the office component into the warehouse, DCI used an expansion joint to join both designs in a cohesive manner.

Project Highlights

  • Engineers fit two greatly different designs into the same project: a warehouse and an office.
  • There is a cool-down area for beer keg storage in the warehouse.
  • Concrete floors will withstand delivery-truck thru-traffic.

I love to solve problems – Sudoku puzzles, crosswords, cryptograms, brain teasers. Then, there’s combining problem solving with math, drawings and construction that is our trade by nature. By never settling for ‘cookie cutter’ solutions, but instead developing tailored engineering designs specific to each project… well, that makes for a very rewarding career.”
