Turfway Park Racing and Gaming Facility

Racing to Open: How built-up trusses were the key to getting Turfway Park up and running

This new horse track and gaming facility in Florence, Kentucky, simplifies the facilities necessary for a development like this with four 56-stall modular barns next to back stretch of the horse track. DCI surveyed the site and 28 old barns, recommending repairs for some and demolition for others. DCI also designed the structural system for a new two-story wood framed dormitory for the race teams’ lodging. The Turfway Parks crown Jewel is the new Historic Racing Machine gaming and event center. The gaming center has 800 gaming machines, a VIP lounge, and a nearly 20,000-sf event center and stage for performances, as well as a raised second story judge’s booth.

The project was constructed when there was a shortage of steel joists, which increased their lead time and their cost. To save time and money for the project owners, DCI devised lateral framing systems for the buildings using built-up steel trusses.
