The Village SF Wellness Center is a mixed-use community and housing development built in partnership with local tribes to serve San Francisco's urban Native American population, home to roughly 18,000 American Indian and Alaska Native residents. Located at 80 Julian Avenue in the Mission District's American Indian Cultural District, the project brings housing, healthcare, and culture together under one roof.
A coalition of Native-led organizations — including Friendship House Association of American Indians and the Native American Health Center — worked with architect Pyatok on a building that houses community services, a medical and dental clinic, a Women's Lodge, and transitional housing, topped by a green roof with a healing garden and small farm. A hybrid structural system — concrete at grade, exposed mass timber through the mid-levels, and lightweight steel above — balances durability and sustainability with the flexibility the project's many uses demand.
The Village SF Wellness Center has earned a 2024 USGBC-CA Green Building Award, a 2023 Mass Timber Award, and recognition from the AIA East Bay and PCBC Gold Nugget Awards.
