Eco-Friendly Work/Study Place: Site prepped for net-zero commercial building

The $60M Catalyst Building in Spokane serves as Eastern Washington University’s new location for electrical & computer engineering and computer science & design programs. The 150,000-gsf commercial building includes amenities such as dry labs, offices, classrooms, and common study areas.

DCI’s civil engineering team worked with South Landing Investors, Inc. to prep the 3-acre site for the new five-story, cross laminated timber mid-rise. The civil team compiled the erosion control plan, site utility & grading permit, stormwater, and utility plans.

Project Highlights

  • The original site challenges involved shallow rock and potential soil containments. Resolving the conditions entailed importing structural fill material to raise the site as much as 8-feet above original site elevations. It also prompted the team to coordinate an onsite stormwater detention vault to restrict outflow to the city’s sewer system.
  • The Catalyst Building can achieve net-zero energy consumption. Building owners are aiming for International Living Future Institute certification.
