Designing for Unique Municipal Features: Accommodating council chambers and a cantilevered staircase in a government building

DCI Engineers provided civil and structural design services for this 158,000-sf government building that features council chambers, administration space, and underground parking. End-use tenants include local, state, and federal agencies.

Project Highlights

  • Basic structure is comprised of a steel framed building with composite beams sitting on a post-tensioned transfer slab.
  • Designed a plate girder to transfer out four levels of load above a two-story tall council chamber.
  • Included design that laterally supports the feature stair that cantilevers laterally out from the structure at an angle of 26’.
  • Civil services included design and permit documents for storm water drainage and runoff control, under-slab drains, external sewer, domestic and fire and water services, and right-of-way street improvements.
