Rocky Mountain Ranch is a 22,250-sf, two-story private residence with a daylight basement, located in the Yellowstone Club Preserve near Big Sky, Montana. Perched at 8,300 feet, the home overlooks the surrounding valley with direct views of the Spanish Peaks and the broader alpine landscape.
The residence was deliberately sited to preserve natural topography and limit site impacts while capturing expansive views. The structural design responds directly to the steep terrain, with stepped concrete foundations that align with grade changes and support the multi-level layout. An open floor plan with long spans required steel framing integrated with wood and CMU systems, including steel moment frames and shear walls to address high seismic demands.
Extensive glazing and operable wall systems are supported by carefully detailed steel framing, allowing indoor spaces to remain visually connected to the landscape. Hand-framed rafters, structural steel beams, and exposed steel trusses support architectural elements such as the porte cochere and elevated screened porch, while offset CMU fireplace stacks and an indoor pool introduce localized structural complexity.
